Solid Walls, Day One

We started hanging the sheet rock today! These guys move quickly, and we’re more than halfway done. G-d Willing the walls should all be completed tomorrow.

Spray Foam Insulation

We’re preparing to sheet rock the walls, and the final preparation is the spray foam insulation. The outer walls of the reception room, laundry room, and handicap accessible preparation room are against interior concrete walls. With the temperature difference between the rooms and the walls, the concrete can collect condensation which can lead to a mold problem in the future. To reduce the risk of this happening, we coated the walls with a spray foam insulation that creates a moisture barrier and prevents condensation from collecting.

Plumbing Rough-In

After the walls were framed, while the electrical wires were being laid, we installed the plumbing – the steel vent pipes and the copper supply pipes. We piped out the showers and connected the tubs, as well.

Electrical Rough-In

After the rooms were framed out, we began the process of installing the electrical wiring for the lights, outlets, etc.

HVAC Installation

We are installing a ductless split HVAC system. It is more cost effective to install, easier to maintain, and sleek and relatively unobtrusive.

Framing the Rooms

With the concrete all poured, it’s time to start putting up some rooms! First step: frame them up, with metal studs. A hard plasticky material called azac was used to lay the track, to cut down on vibrations (from sound and other sources) causing the metal studs to grind against the concrete floors.

Water Testing the System

After the floors were all poured and enough time had passed that the upper trough had cured enough to support its own weight, we put the pump in the mikvah and ran the big hose up to the top of the upper trough, to cycle the water through and make sure that there were no leaks anywhere and that everything flowed smoothly.

After the troughs were all cured, and the radiantly-heated floors of the mikvah room and prep rooms were cured, we poured the rest of the floors.

Constructing the Transfer boxes and troughs

Once the otzar had sat for two weeks with water, to test it for leaks and to activate the Xypex (the waterproofing additive), it is time to build the rest of the concrete parts of the water-collection system. This includes a trough at the top, for the water from the roof to flow into the otzar, two transfer boxes for the water to flow out of the otzar, and two troughs that run from the transfer boxes to the two side rainwater pits.

The form for the transfer boxes (top) connected to the form for the troughs. The inner forms for the trough that create the actual trough part will be installed as it gets poured.

The pier to support the top trough that will receive the water from the roof. A solid 16" x 16" block of concrete.
